They Come Running

What is it about hot bread, fresh out of the oven that can make children who have not stepped foot off of their new trampoline in over five hours come running!!!??

It must be the hotness and freshness, I guess.

Here's the soda bread that I made tonight.  We busted into it immediately and thoroughly enjoyed it, but after eating just one piece (ok, maybe two) I'm not sure that I can eat another thing for like two days.  Very hearty.

Very good.

Here's the recipe:

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 1/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/2 cups buttermilk

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Lightly grease two baking sheets.

In a large bowl, stir together whole wheat flour, white flour, rolled oats, baking soda and salt. Gently mix in the buttermilk until a soft dough is formed. Knead very lightly. Divide dough into 4 pieces; form into rounded flat loaves. Mark each loaf with an 'X' and place on prepared baking sheets.

Bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 to 45 minutes.

I hear that the cross on the bread has no religious significance.
It just makes it easier to share.

I believe that hail is now falling from the sky and my children will not come in off the trampoline.  Correction, they will come in to stick their feet in hot water from the tap and then back out again with no clothes on.

They are freezing, and they flat out do not care.

Time to go be a Mommy.

I wonder if they will come running for dinner part 2?

  1. MMM! This sounds so yummy, I could use a loaf of this right now. How fun to jump on the trampoline!!!

  2. at least the snow has melted. hot bread on a cold day is a treat anytime...

  3. wow, no yeast, that sounds quick. Hey, but what about no running with sticks, and no jumping with umbrellas--hahaha, got to love being a kid.

  4. Can you hear me running over to your house?

  5. I have never tried soda bread. We will have to give it a try around here. We eat mostly our own bread and we all love it. At least I know what is in it!! And my kids are doing the same things around here. Going outside sans coats and hats and trying to convince me that 40 degrees is warm.

  6. i love that your kids are outside for forever! it makes me so excited for summer!

  7. Oh my gosh...the backdrop of your backyard makes me so homesick for PA!! I love it there....and those beautiful old houses. I'm sure you love it too! :)
