FREE Thanksgiving Activities

President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “When you walk with gratitude, you do not walk with arrogance and conceit and egotism, you walk with a spirit of thanksgiving that is becoming to you and will bless your lives."

Here are some fun (free) things that I'm incorporating in our month-long celebration of Thanksgiving to focus on gratitude.

This free printable 12-Day Thanksgiving Countdown Calendar with activities to do each day:

Thanksgiving Countdown Calendar

Reading one of my favorite books of all-time,
by Laurie Halse Anderson

You can find it at your local library--totally free!
Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving
We're talking about "going the second mile" as Jesus taught, so we'll try to fill our charts up with examples of my kids going the second mile in service to others.  Serving others is one way to show gratitude to the Lord for our blessings.

Singing songs about Thanksgiving:

One of our favorites is this funny little chant:

"The turkey is a funny bird.  His head goes bobble, bobble,
but he can only say one word.....GOBBLE, GOBBLE, GOBBLE!!!"

You can find tons of great songs on gratitude to sing with your kids here.

Thomas S. Monson

Read and discuss this talk by President Monson during FHE:
"The Divine Gift of Gratitude"

This Family Home Evening Lesson from The Golden Seven is FULL of great activities and ideas!!!  Click below to print it off.

Do a little genealogy:  Looking for "pilgrims" in your family history

My husband and I are both descendants of Williams Bradford a key leader of the pilgrims in their journey on the Mayflower and in the New World.

We'll talk about his contributions to the pilgrims and to our family.

Find someone to spotlight from your heritage as well and teach your children to be thankful for the work that people did before them to give them what they have today.

  5. This is wonderful, Jocelyn! Makes me wish I still had kids at home to take advantage of it. But I am definitely going to have my DIL come and check it out for the grandkids!!

I have a cool story about the five kernels of corn, if you don't already have it. If you'd like it, email me and I'll send it along.

Have fun being thankful with your kids! (Looking at all of this, I KNOW you will...)

  8. We always try to remember the things we are thankful for and to acknowledge them. I also like to do a family service project this month. Last year, we invited all of our home teaching families over to our house for dinner. The kids helped to make and prepare everything and we had Thanksgiving dinner two weeks early. We Home teach four elderly couples who loved coming to our house with the kids. It was an amazing opportunity to teach my children about gratitude for those around us.
