The Hiding Place

I started The Hiding Place last night.

Three pages into it Corrie ten Boom had already blown my mind at least five times.

Such faith! Such wisdom.

I resumed my reading after everyone else went to sleep.

Although I was alone in my living room reading until 3:00 AM, it felt like Corrie and her family and friends were right here with me recounting their experiences in person.  I found myself uttering my replies aloud, "Amazing...Incredible...Wonderful...Yes!" (Bastian from Never-Ending Story had nothing on me last night!)

I have been completely engrossed in all three books that I have read so far this month.
I know that I was meant to read these books in sequence.  They represent quite a body of proof that God cares about our lives, that beauty shines through ugliness, that when we put our hand in His, we can face the darkness of this world and come out triumphant, that Love is more powerful than hate, that meekness is not weakness.

One would think that I wasn't throwing a birthday party in three days.

I guess I should go wash my hair now.

  3. Since my brain surgery reading has become a hard thing for me to do. I read one chapter a day in my scriptures but then I have to process and think of what I read for the entire day, so I won't forget it. Its difficult for me to retain anything in my subconcious after having 3 brain surgeries and surviving a coma. But I do read other books throughout the year (about 2) but they do take me all year to finish them.

  4. I LOVE that book! I especially love her father. That man seems to have been wisdom personified. I so loved the way he explained the birds and the bees to her when she was young. We have to teach kids about such things far too early in my opinion.
Such a wonderful story of faith and being happy in the darkest of times. So happy you've enjoyed it to!:)

  8. LOVE that book! It's one I will always keep on my bookshelf and reread through out my life.
Sometimes when I get complaining about life I think of her and how she was thankful for fleas and I try to remember that I have it good.

  11. That book was so touching. I read it right after I read Diary of Anne Frank and I was stunned by the huge difference of selfish vs. selfless attitude. So glad you got to read it.

  12. This book has been on my list for awhile now, but I hesitate to pick it up because I know it will be a one-sitting book for me, and I know it will be amazing. Somehow that is daunting to me.

  17. I read it I think a couple of years ago and loved it. I can't imagine living through all of that and not being bitter all the time. She is such an example.

Today I got the Pompeii Street Soap that I won here. Thank you!!! I hope to mention it and your blog on my blog later this week. :)

  19. She has written others as well that are fascinating, about her ministries afterwards. Another biography you might enjoy is Maria Von Trapp's books, one the movie Sound of Music was based on and she writes about how it affected her life in the next book.

    1. Thanks for that recommendation, Heidi! I actually played Maria in my 4th grade concert...my little claim to fame! ha ha...but I've never read anything other than a newspaper article about the real life family that my mom found for me during that time. I'm going to have to check that out! Thanks again!
